Our Music and Sound Studies concentration is rooted in African culture and draws from indigenous knowledge sources. Artists drawn to the Mbira, Marimba, Seperewa, Ngoma, Hosho, and other traditional musics of the world are invited to this space, as well as artists drawn to the Amapiano, Afrobeats, and other new modern versions of sounds coming out from the continent.

How we Support a Learner in the Music and Sound Studies Program:

A rapper, aged 25, wants to become an independent artist. Has the talent, drive, and motivation, but does not have the equipment, training, knowledge of the market, budgeting, revenue streams, marketing, etc. So we, as the CAE, remove barriers to this independent artist’s dream, we make sure we have supported their journey at every angle- help them purchase their own DAW, or they can use the DAW at the CAE. They also get mentorship and counseling, as well as professional development opportunities through one-on-one sessions with industry professionals, 2 hours once a week.
